Type 2 Diabetes :: essays research papers
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness that is a result of the bodyââ¬â¢s insulin not functioning correctly. It was formerly called adult-onset or insulin-dependent. It is also the most common kind of diabetes accounting for about 90 percent of all diabetes cases. Type 2 diabetes can also cause obesity and high cholesterol. About 6 percent of the population suffers from diabetes while about one-third of those who do have it, do not know about it. Insulin is a chemical that is released by the body to control blood sugar levels. It allows glucose to enter cells where it is used for daily functions. When blood glucose cannot be absorbed into cells, the energy cannot be expended and is then expelled through the kidneys. It starts as some of the bodyââ¬â¢s cells develop a resistance to insulin. This causes the liver to function without control, so it continues to release glucose. Without the cells picking up glucose high levels of glucose in the blood persist, which is a condition called hyperglycemia. à à à à à Some symptoms are excessive thirst, urinating frequently, and hunger. Fatigue can also be a sign of diabetes. Diabetic ketonacidoses can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes. This is when the cells do not get enough glucose and begin to burn fat. When the cells burn fat for energy it results in the release of waste products, know as ketones. High levels of ketones in the body can produce large amounts of acid, and if not tended to, will cause a person to go into a coma or can possibly be fatal. Diabetes is usually diagnosed by testing blood glucose levels. These tests tell doctors if the body is using insulin correctly by detecting how much glucose stays in the blood stream. Most doctors recommend daily exercise and strict diets to treat type 2 diabetes.

Meeting an old friend
A man is a Social Animal involved in the intricacies of every social behavior he is expected to involve in. The richness of his social behavior lies in his varied actions which he is expected to behave in the Society-among his family, peers, neighbors, and most sensuous of all friendship. But his mind is a very complex part of the body, which keeps involving the man into varied activities, 24 hours a day. In this hush and bush of your daily chores, one day you come across a person while you are in relax mood and enjoying the Exhibition in a Grand Hall at Park Avenue. He comes in front of you and suddenly speaks in a louder but a very friendly tone, hi, How are you? And you keep on looking at him. This gaze clearly states that you have been engaged so much in your personal affairs that you not only forgot him but also his name, and are now trying to recollect his name. He asked you, ââ¬Å"How are you? And you replied decently, I am very well, fine, Thank You. And then he will say, ââ¬Å"I was longing to meet you but could not get time,â⬠and you will reply ââ¬Å"Oh! how sweet of you, even I was longing to meet you but I got so involved in the pursuit of my career that I did not get time to meet you. It was so hectic in the office that I did not have a single minute to even breatheâ⬠. This dialogue dictates your etiquette, though you have forgotten the name of your friend with whom you have spend so precious moments of your life, still you are not trying to show that you have forgotten him. He is making out that you have forgotten him and he will say, ââ¬Å"Hey! I think you have forgotten me, and why not, we are meeting after such a long time, so it is so natural that you may forget me.â⬠I only remembered that we have studied together in school. He started talking of good old school days, when we enjoy a lot, have all the fun, played pranks on teachers and the crushes we had on the beautiful girls in our school and then he involves you so much in conversation that you forgot you donââ¬â¢t remember his name. All of a sudden from my mouth it comes out,à ââ¬Å"Rick.â⬠He stops laughing and began to stare at me. I smelled that something was wrong with the name. He in a very low voice says, ââ¬Å"Hello, I am David, not Rick.â⬠, then only the name strikes in my memory andà I start cursing myself, that he remembered my name and every little things about mine, whereas I completely forgot his name and on the top of it dared not accept the failure to recall his name. I wants to apologize but the words stopped flowing from mouth and I became speechless. He understands the position and to ease the situation, he starts laughing. I asks for his apology and he accepted to give on one condition that in future I would be honest while portraying my feelings. No doubt man feels very embarrassed if he forgets his old time friend but it is also true that with time generally memory fades in many human beings. This behavior in humans is explained by Rethinking Interference theory of G. E. Mueller and Pilzecker who claims that man has to involve in number of activities and his brain is thinking all the time.à With the passing time new experiences enter into the memory the older begin to erase because the process, which is involved in storing new memories generally disrupts the old consolidation processes, which could have traced the events of our lives remained in our memory storage. Essay on John Singletons Boyz in the Hood - 1263 Words
Boyz in the Hood is a statement of how urban youth have been passed a legacy of tragic indifference, and the writer has shown that it is an almost inescapable fate for those born into racism and poverty to repeat the patterns they wish to escape. The movieââ¬â¢s characters are clear representations of how the system fails young black youth in the United States, and the difference one mentor can make for these kids. During segregation young black children became targets for white brutality. This movie reflects what the European mentality and what it has done to the African American culture. It officially ended de jure legal inequality, so it was no longer legal for employers, for landlords, or for any public institution or accommodations to discriminate based on race. At the same time, those civil rights triumphs did nothing to address the underlying economic and social inequalities that had already been in place because of hundreds of years of inequality.â⬠(Conley pp 1). What goes on in the American ghetto is not as glamorous as Hollywood makes it out to be now, this film does a great job at depicting wha t life in the ghetto for black teens is really like. The ghettos in America are full of broken culture that is left behind from centuries of oppression by the white man. Most teens like those in the movie never make it out of their neighborhoods alive. Thousands of kids die every years from gang on gang violence, damaging all chances of them escaping the ghetto and making something of themselves. Death, gangs, and drugs is the more common way that young people are left with to deal with a life of poverty and survival that seems to have no escape. Italian Immigrants in America Essay - 1350 Words
Italian Immigrants in America Ever since the United States was founded, immigrants have been arriving on its soil. The first white inhabitants of the U.S. were immigrants from Europe. They came for many reasons, such as religion and opportunity. As the country grew and became more prosperous, it became more enticing to foreigners looking for opportunity. This continued into the 20th century and finally during the 1920ââ¬â¢s, the United States began to restrict immigrants from coming to their country, mostly for cultural and economic reasons. Even the immigrants that were allowed in during the 20ââ¬â¢s faced many hardships such as religious persecution, racism, and xenia phobia. The Italians and other immigrants were blamed for many of the nations problems. For example, the government led raids on immigr antsââ¬â¢ houses because they feared the immigrants were communists. This was evidenced in the Sacco and Vanzetti trial, when two Italian immigrants were convicted for murder and the prosecution had no real substantial evidence. They were convicted mainly because of their beliefs, not their actions. Religious beliefs also brought the immigrants problems. The KKK was openly anti-Catholic and most of the Italians were catholic. The immigrants and Italians also helped to bring on prohibition. The Americans didnt approve of their drinking habits; therefore the prohibition amendment was made for this and other reasons. Job competition was also a major reason for the racist feelings of the Americans. Native white workers saw the immigrants as competitors for the jobs that they felt they should have. A good example of this competition was ââ¬Å"birds of passage.â⬠These were Italian workers who came to work in the U.S. but later returned to Italy with the money they earn ed in the U.S. From 1899-1924 3.8 million Italians came to the United States, but 2.1 million left to return to Italy during the sameShow MoreRelatedItalian Immigrants Holiday Traditions1262 Words à |à 5 Pageshere has been lost. Jean Claude Van Damme
Jean Claude Van Damme-Double Impact Essay The movie opens twenty-five years ago in Hong Kong. The parents oftwo twin babies, Alex and Chad, had borrowed money from Raymond Zhang andNigel Griffith, two lead smugglers. They needed the money in order tobuild a tunnel between Hong Kong and the mainland. After the tunnel wasbuilt and the money collected, Nigel Griffith and Raymond Zhang had a gangof hit men massacre Alex and Chads family. Frank Avery, a friend of thefamily, races into the scene and finds the parents already dead. The twobabies are in the back seat with a maid. She takes Alex and flees thescene. Frank sees Chad left behind and takes him and runs. Twenty-five years after these events we find Frank Avery, who isplayed by Geoffrey Lewis, has raised Chad as his own kid. They own a gymin Los Angelos. Frank has been trying to locate the other brother for thepast twenty-five years and has finally found his whereabouts in Hong Kong, working for Raymond Zhang, played by Philip Chan Yan Kin, and NigelGriffith, played by Alan Scarfe. Frank and Chad go to Hong Kong and meethis brother. Interesting events take place when they arrive since Alexsgirlfriend Danielle Wilde, played by Alonna Shaw, thinks that Chad is Alex.Alex arrives and head butts Chad. When Chad revives from being knockunconscious, Frank convinces the two brothers to help avenge the deaths oftheir parents. The setting for this movie is very appropriate. They are in Hong Kongwhere the laws are not up to par with the American Style. This allows thecorrupt trades of Zhang, Griffith, and Alex to go on hardly disturbed bythe Hong Kong police. The dominant theme in Double Impact is vengeance and it is seen quitereadily once the action gets rolling. Alex and Chad are out to kill Zhangand Griffith for the massacre of their parents. As the movie rolls on, Alexbecomes suspicious of Chad because he thinks that he is playing around withhis girlfriend Danielle. We see Alexs thoughts of Chad with Danielle ashe becomes drunker and his mind imagines that they are having sex together. These thoughts enrage Alex and he fights his own brother. The whole movie was directed and acted very well considering Chad andAlex are both played by the same person, Jean-Claude Van Damme, whichjustifies the movies name, Double Impact. The main character Jean-ClaudeVan Damme plays more roles than just casting. He is also the fightchoreographer and one of the producers. His talent of kickboxing has comethrough in his first great achievement where he played as Frank Dux inBloodsport. Another great kickboxer in Double Impact is Bolo Yeung, whoalso played in Bloodsport, both times as the villain against Jean-ClaudeVan Damme. Although Jean-Claude Van Damme is mainly known for his kickboxing,Double Impact is a different story. The kickboxing and fighting has beentoned down somewhat in this movie. Most of the fights are with highpowered guns as they, Chad and Alex, seek to find Zhang and Griffith andkill them. The special effects in this movie are amazing. Not one placein the movie is it slightly obvious that Chad and Alex are both the sameguy, except that you know they are in reality. To top off the amazement onthe viewers part, the movie producers include a fight with Jean-Claude VanDamme against himself! How they pieced the fighting scenes like this oneand the special effects of the two brothers working together is a greatachievement. There has been so much time and precision taken into accountwhen the movie was produced and it shows through its many scenes of actionwith the two brothers fighting. Ways of Seeing Similarities in Point of View in Cathedral and A Conversation with My Father
The short stories Cathedral by Raymond Carver and A Conversation with My Father by Grace Paley, while they differ in characterization, both employ a detached narrative point of view to create an emotional experience of profound isolation in the reader.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ways of Seeing: Similarities in Point of View in Cathedral and A Conversation with My Father specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In Carverââ¬â¢s (2006) story, we learn the emotional isolation experienced by the narrator almost immediately, through his description of his own wifeââ¬â¢s attempted suicide, and his description of the death of Robertââ¬â¢s wife. Carverââ¬â¢s narrator maintains a cold distance from the emotional impact of having very nearly lost his wife before he met her. Carverââ¬â¢s narrator seems more engaged by the competition between himself and his wifeââ¬â¢s first husband, as evidenced herein: ââ¬Å "one night she got to feeling lonely and cut off from people she kept losing in that moving-around life. She got to feeling she couldnââ¬â¢t go it another step. She went in and swallowed all the pills and capsules in the medicine chestâ⬠¦But instead of dying, she got sick. She threw up. Her officerââ¬âwhy should he have a name? he was the childhood sweetheart, and what more does he want?â⬠(Carver, 2006). As Bullock (1994) details, in the narratorââ¬â¢s account of his wifeââ¬â¢s attempted suicide, ââ¬Å"the figures in the storyââ¬âthe wife, the officer, the blind manââ¬âseem a long distance away, tiny separated figures, observed by a detached, all-seeing eye. They might as well be figures on the screen of the television.â⬠Similarly, when the narrator describes the loss of Beulah, Robertââ¬â¢s wife, he betrays an almost savage disregard for Robertââ¬â¢s emotions when he says, ââ¬Å"Beulahââ¬â¢s health went into rapid decline. She died in a Seattle hospital room, the blind man sitting beside the bed and holding on to her hand. Theyââ¬â¢d married, lived and worked together, slept togetherââ¬âhad sex, sureââ¬âand then the blind man had to bury her. All this without his having ever seen what the goddamned woman looked like. It was beyond my understandingâ⬠(Carver, 2006). Significantly, the narrator never names his wife. He identifies her only by role. This omission creates a distinct absence of personality in the woman. The narrator feels no real connection with her as a human being, aside from a mildly competitive instinct to assert his ownership over her body when she falls asleep and her robe opens in front of Robert. The point of view on display from Carverââ¬â¢s narrator reveals the vast emotional distance that exists between himself and other people, and he transmits and transfers this distance to us, the reader. The narrator feels nothing when describing intensely emotional events; he recount s them as though they were news.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Carverââ¬â¢s use of point of view allows us to perceive the world from the same standoffish, sharply critical distance that the narrator does, and ironically, this brings us closer to him. The narrator in Grace Paleyââ¬â¢s (2006) A Conversation with My Father follows a different characterization than Carverââ¬â¢s, however, the point of view contains the same chilled ââ¬Å"distance between observer and observedâ⬠(Bullock, 1994). Paleyââ¬â¢s narrator initially appears more animated, more engaged, than Carverââ¬â¢s. An example occurs in the storyââ¬â¢s opening when she expresses ââ¬Å"I want to please him, though I donââ¬â¢t remember writing that way. I would like to try to tell s uch a story, if he means the kind that begins: ââ¬Å"There was a womanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ followed by plot, the absolute line between two points which Iââ¬â¢ve always despised. Not for literary reasons, but because it takes all hope away. Everyone, real or invented, deserves the open destiny of lifeâ⬠(Paley, 2006). Such passages suggest that Paleyââ¬â¢s narrator might be more sympathetic to the plight of other humans than Carverââ¬â¢s narrator, and therefore, more capable of true human emotional empathy, however, when we look closer, we see that Paleyââ¬â¢s narrator, like Carverââ¬â¢s, identifies her father exclusively by role. He is never named in the story. Also, Paleyââ¬â¢s narrator betrays the same disparaging judgmental point of view as Carverââ¬â¢s when she says, ââ¬Å"people start out fantastic, you think theyââ¬â¢re extraordinary, but it turns out as the work goes along, theyââ¬â¢re just average with a good educationâ⬠(Paley, 2006). Critic s such as Wilde delineate this storyââ¬â¢s meaning via gender roles, and link gender to ways of seeing. Wilde (1987) explains that in A Conversation with My Father, ââ¬Å"the paternal world ââ¬â encoded in the fatherââ¬â¢s request that his daughter compose ââ¬Å"a simple story â⬠¦ Just recognizable people and then write down what happened to them nextâ⬠ââ¬â- bases itself on unexamined and peremptory powers of discernment and identification. Defensively but still smugly, it prescribes an impossibly ââ¬Å"simple,â⬠stable, and objective mirror to reflect what it takes to be the inevitable, sequential trajectory of lifeââ¬â¢s beginnings, middles, and ends.â⬠However, the narrator herself displays the same critical, armââ¬â¢s length point of view as Carverââ¬â¢s, which results in a similar isolating emotional experience in the reader. The way that the narrator tells the story of the neighbor across the street barely conceals her disapproval of the womanââ¬â¢s choices, as we see here: ââ¬Å"Although she was often high herself, certain good mothering reflexes remained, and she saw to it that there was lots of orange juice around and honey and milk and vitamin pills.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ways of Seeing: Similarities in Point of View in Cathedral and A Conversation with My Father specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, she never cooked anything but chili, and that no more than once a week. She explained, when we talked to her, seriously, with neighborly concern, that it was her part in the youth culture and she would rather be with the young, it was an honor, than with her own generationâ⬠(Paley, 2006). In this passage we see real similarities between the dismissal of emotion portrayed by the Carver narrator when describing the death of Robertââ¬â¢s wife and the near death of his own. Similarly, Paleyââ¬â¢s narrator passes judgment on the neighbor womanââ¬â¢s motivations, as we see in this section: ââ¬Å"In order to keep him from feeling guilty (because guilt is the stony heart of nine tenths of all clinically diagnosed cancers in America today, she said), and because she had always believed in giving bad habits room at home where one could keep an eye on them, she too became a junkie. Her kitchen was famous for a while ââ¬â a center for intellectual addicts who knew what they were doingâ⬠(Paley, 2006). There is a sarcastic and dismissive undertone to Paleyââ¬â¢s narratorââ¬â¢s description, which echoââ¬â¢s Carverââ¬â¢s narrator description, as seen here: ââ¬Å"She could, if she wanted, wear green eye-shadow around one eye, a straight pin in her nostril, yellow slacks, and purple shoes, no matter. And then to slip off into death, the blind manââ¬â¢s hand on her hand, his blind eyes streaming tearsââ¬âIââ¬â¢m imagining nowââ¬âher last thought maybe this: that he never even knew what she looked like, and she on an express to the grave. Robert was left with a small insurance policy and a half of a twenty-peso Mexican coin. The other half of the coin went into the box with her. Patheticâ⬠(Carver, 2006). Within Paleyââ¬â¢s narratorââ¬â¢s description of her neighbor lies the same biting judgment and fault finding as Carverââ¬â¢s, and the same dismissal of emotional context as it pertains to action. The short stories Cathedral and A Conversation with My Father, at first glance, appear very different, not only because the narrators differ in gender, but also as the writing styles feel opposite. Carverââ¬â¢s voice remains minimalist and monotonous throughout, while Paleyââ¬â¢s contains more tonal shifts and humor. However, upon closer inspection the reader sees that both narrators employ the same superior, cold, remote approach to human interaction, both pass harsh judgment on others, and both refer to those closest to them â â¬â Carverââ¬â¢s narratorââ¬â¢s wife, and Paleyââ¬â¢s narratorââ¬â¢s father ââ¬â exclusively by role and function, as opposed to by name. Both stories thus create an isolating emotional experience on the page and in the reader.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you!
